'A litigation attorney is a lawyer who represents clients in court cases and other kinds of adversarial legal proceedings such as arbitrations, mediations and administrative law proceedings. Litigation attorneys are advocates who are familiar with court pleadings and court processes. Litigation attorneys are generally well-spoken advocates and are comfortable presenting cases in front of judges and juries. Examples of litigation attorneys are commercial and complex civil litigation attorneys (who represent clients in commercial and business matters in civil court) and district attorneys, public defenders and criminal attorneys (who represent clients in criminal matters in criminal court). Litigation attorneys are generally contrasted with transactional attorneys, who typically do not go into court, but instead assist their clients in preparing legal documents and closing deals outside of courtrooms.
